Conclusion

Given the results of this analysis, we consider Big Data to be predominantly unstructured data that is automatically generated in real time and which may surpass the capacity of existing infrastructure and data management systems. Big Data can originate from a firm’s internal (i.e., strategic business unit- or firm-level) and external components (i.e., customer-, supply chain partner-, or industry-level). Currently, some primary concerns with Big Data involve determining how best to capture, store, analyze, and share the data that emerges.

Although often associated with Internet-based firms, the ability to control the flow and usage of Big Data is not just something that will impact mammoth online retailers such as Amazon. The managers who participated in our study indicated that traditional firms and their supply chain partners will also likely be affected by the Big Data “revolution.”

Despite the differences that emerged regarding how to define Big Data in various countries, we suggest the supply chain field focus on a global understanding but take regional specifics into account when collaborating across borders. From a global perspective, Big Data in supply chain management should be characterized as relationship-based information unique to business because of its volume, velocity, variety, and veracity.
